	OVERVIEW The familial hypercholesterolemias represent a group of autosomal dominant genetic defects that result in severely elevated blood cholesterol levels, LDL receptor and function deficiencies, and significantly increased risk of premature coronary heart disease (CHD). By attending this CME activity, the physician will learn the contributions, pathophysiolgy, epidemiology, prevalence and genetic basis of familial hypercholesterolemia and its significant contribution to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, as well as the appropriate measures to screen and treat this devastating disorder.

	OVERVIEW Although statins significantly reduce LDL-C levels, patients still have a considerable residual risk related to their dyslipidemia. Several studies have shown that non-HDL-C levels and elevated triglyceride levels are predictive of cardiovascular events, independent of LDL-C levels, suggesting targets for therapeutic interventions to reverse atherosclerosis. Some patient populations, such as those with the metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease and certain ethnic groups are at even greater risk. Lifestyle changes have been shown to provide some benefit, but patients at elevated risk will likely require pharmacological therapy, such as fenofibrates, niacin, omega-3 acid ethyl esters and gemfibrozil in combination with statin therapy to reduce their atherosclerotic burden.

	OVERVIEW Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common form of arrhythmia observed in clinical practice. Although not typically life-threatening itself, AF represents a major risk factor for stroke and major cause of death and serious long-term disability. Approximately 15% of the 795,000 new or recurrent strokes that occur each year develop in patients with AF. Appropriate management of patients with AF involves the assessment of stroke risk and, when indicated, long-term anticoagulation therapy.
