OVERVIEW
World class lipid experts answer tough questions on hot topics in lipidology at the Lipid Summit in Philadelphia including the effects of various therapies on HDL-C and HDL-P, the use of HDL modulation therapies in acute coronary syndrome, the effects of CETP inhibition on HDL-C, HDL-P and HDL functionality, HDL as a marker of risk or target for therapy, the value of calculating non-HDL-C and the effects of drug therapy to reduce non-HDL-C, as well as the importance of residual risk for cardiovascular events on statin therapy and critiques on the AIM-HIGH, FIELD and ACCORD-LIPID trials.

OVERVIEW
The success of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) reduction to improve cardiovascular outcomes is now well recognized. Yet, despite optimal LDL-C management, patients with low HDL-C remain at increased risk. To date, efforts to raise HDL-C by pharmacologic means have not shown a clinical benefit. This series examines the “HDL hypothesis”—that the benefits of modifying HDL are mediated through several atheroprotective mechanisms—and explores possible new agents for raising HDL-C.

OVERVIEW
While bariatric surgery can improve an obese patient’s overall health by limiting risk for diabetes and hypertension, patients require careful postoperative monitoring to maintain optimal health. In this activity, hear about the tests that should be ordered for postoperative patients, micronutrients that may require supplementation to avoid deficiencies, and the risk for regaining lost weight.

OVERVIEW
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common form of arrhythmia observed in clinical practice. Although not typically life-threatening itself, AF represents a major risk factor for stroke and major cause of death and serious long-term disability. Approximately 15% of the 795,000 new or recurrent strokes that occur each year develop in patients with AF. Appropriate management of patients with AF involves the assessment of stroke risk and, when indicated, long-term anticoagulation therapy.

OVERVIEW
Diabetes significantly increases a patient’s risk of atherosclerotic events. In this monograph, leading clinicians will evaluate and explain how the implementation of therapeutic lifestyle changes, diet, and exercise along with appropriate medication can improve HDL levels and attenuate cardiovascular risk in the patient with type 2 diabetes. The safety and efficacy of treatment strategies for dyslipidemia concomitant to diabetes will be addressed, including CETP inhibition, an emerging approach that increases HDL concentration and may reduce atherosclerotic events.
