Magnetic resonance oximetry may provide new measurement of vascular competence

Transient changes in post-occlusive venous blood oxygenation were associated with reduced vascular competence in patients with abnormal ankle-brachial index during the hyperemic period after cuff-induced ischemia, study results suggested.

The researchers included three groups of patients in the study. They enrolled 12 patients with peripheral arterial disease (with a mean ankle-brachial index of 0.6), eight age-matched control patients and 10 young, healthy patients. Using magnetic resonance–based oxygenation oximetry, the researchers compared post-occlusive ...

Additional genetic components identified for heart condition that causes sudden death

New findings challenged previous assumptions about the genetic basis of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, a condition that can result in HF and sudden death if left untreated, and these findings may have important implications for genetic screening.

Contrary to the belief that a single mutation in the PKP2 gene is responsible for arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), the new findings indicated that multiple mutations within PKP2 or in many genes simultaneously may also play a part in the disorder.
